The Opportunity
Koorie Pre-School Assistant (KPSA)
Part Time or Full Time: 22 hours β 38 hoursper week dependant on candidate.12 Month Fixed Term Maternity Leave Position, ideally starting end of September/ Early October.
Reporting to the General Manager of Early Childhood you will provide culturally relevant information program to registered Kindergartens and Kinder children that will assist to develop awareness and promotion of the Aboriginal culture. The KPSA will have the added duties of supporting kinder aged Aboriginal Children and their families by monitoring attendance and developmental milestones and developing relevant support strategies to assist this. You will need to be highly motivated and enthusiastic and have a sound knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and an ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
In conjunction with Department of Education (DE) and Koorie Engagement Support Officers (KESO) ensure the development and provision of support strategies to assist Aboriginal families, children and teachers during the transition phase from playgroup to kinder as well as kinder to primary school.
Monitor the development of Aboriginal children that attend registered Kindergartens and in conjunction with the kinder teacher and family, develop support strategies for children that are behind in achieving relevant developmental milestones.
Provide supports to Aboriginal Families which will ensure involvement in children's education and the decision-making process.
Liaise with KESO's regarding concerns of the child's attendance and/or family issues that arise and work closely with them to ensure adequate outcomes for the child are reached.
Deliver cultural activities and knowledge sessions to all children attending the facilities, ensuring delivery of Aboriginal cultural history and stories which foster the development of a sound knowledge of Australia's Aboriginal past, present and future.
In conjunction with other KPSAs, establish regular contact with the pre-schools in the Ballarat district and arrange a program of regular visits to provide support and culturally relevant activities.
Assist in the identification of the specific needs of Aboriginal children and work with the pre-school teacher to develop a culturally relevant program which responds to individual needs.
Liaise with staff of other programs at BADAC and other key agencies to improve access and co-ordination in the Early Childhood program for the Aboriginal community.
Provide support on cultural issues and information to kinder teachers as required.
Compile daily statistical data records of services provided and present weekly movement plans and monthly reports to the General Manager of Early Childhood.
Maintain strict standards of confidentiality and act at all times in a professional manner in accordance with the policies and procedures, and values of BADAC.
In collaboration with BADAC's Youth Engagement Team, support the development and implementation of school holiday programs 4 times per year.
Carry out other duties as reasonably requested by General Manager of Early Childhood.
Key Selection Criteria:
Sound knowledge of Aboriginal culture and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people including having an understanding of Australiaβs Aboriginal history.
A demonstrated appreciation of the issues faced by Aboriginals and an understanding of their needs in relation to children's services.
Formal qualifications (Certificate III in Early Childhood, plus First Aid Certificate Workplace Level 2) and experience in working in Early Childhood Services will be an advantage but not essential.
A demonstrated ability to work effectively as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
Information technology skills and knowledge.

Other Relevant Information:
It will be a requirement to actively participate in general staff meetings & any other relevant forums, including staff development sessions.
